Many times, people will ask us for recommended reading material or other resources as part of their preparation for a puppy. We're happy to share our list of favorite books here and links to many products as well. Many of the products are the items we find essential in raising our crew of Havanese here at Tejano. Our list of recommended Havanese products ranges from foods, treats and toys to bedding, leads and other necessary items for you and your Havanese. Happy reading, and happy shopping!
| About Havanese . . . |
Kitty's book is definitely my favorite as she shares her years of dog experience here. As an experienced author, she chose to use photos from many different Hvanese breeders (rather than only using her own dogs...grin) and included only proven health information. Some books include little information on health, while others state theories as if they were proven facts (and later must retract those facts). Kitty strikes a nice blend between those two approaches and I recommend her book highly. And yes, that is a photo of our Daisy in there...grin. |
Zoila's book was the original book written about Havanese and still is very interesting to read. She covers the history of the breed well with a Cuban perspective. Included are many photos of Cuban dogs along with a few from the US. You will probably see dogs who are mentioned in your pedigrees in the photos of this book. |

| About Puppy Behavior and Training . . . |
Written by Ian Dunbar, this would be my top pick for new puppy owners or prospective owners to read. |
Another great book to read prior to your puppy's arrival. The Monks of New Skete always give good advice. |
Written by Pat Hastings, this book also contains much helpful information for breeders regarding early socialization of their puppies. |

| General Dog Behavior & Training |
If you've never seen Cesar working with dogs on TV, you've missed a treat. This book outlines many of those same methods. |
Noted authority, Jean Donaldson, will help you to "think like a dog" and understand what motivates your dog and why they behave the way they do at times. |
The Monks of New Skete, again with sage advice that covers more than just the puppy period. |

| An Introduction to Showing Your Dog |
Noted for his "tough approach" handling classes, George Altson remains the undisputed top teacher when it comes to learning to handle your dog at a professional level. |
This book will be too elementary for those of you with previous experience in showing your dog, but is a great primer for those who are just getting started. Very basic dog show concepts are explained in easy language so that you too can know the difference between WD, WB, BOS, BOB, AOM and all the other acronyms we use routinely in the sport of dogs. |
Pointers from Peter Green, one of the tier one handlers on the circuit today. You've probably seen Peter and his "Green team" interviewed at shows broadcast on the Animal Planet from time to time. |
Ed Gilbert offers a wonderful seminar on Canine Structure and this book goes right along with it in discussing the various "parts" of a dog and how they work together to function (or in some cases, don't work together...grin) |
Rachel Elliott's DogSteps is a classic that examines in detail how to assess and understand a dog's movement...one of the important features of a dog's overall adherance to breed type and conformation.
|
The eleusive "eye" that breeders and judges either have or don't have. This book helps develop that talent and it is interesting to look at other breeds and apply to your own. |

| Breeder Education |
For years, this book was out of print and could only be purchased used and at auctions when some other breeder decided to part with their copy. Absolutely the first book to read when thinking about breeding your dog and whelping a litter. We're very happy to see it back in print!
|
Another good book about breeding and whelping, although not as detailed as The Joy of Breeding shown to the left here. But, a good place to start for general info. |
Sound information that is helpful to any breeder who is breeding for the "right" reason....to improve the breed.
